Create less processing, packaging, and waste.
Millions of tons of natural resources go into packaging our food -- the trees cut down for paper, petroleum turned into plastic, minerals dug up to make aluminum and steel, plus all the energy and oil required to run the factories that make the packaging and then ship it to the factories that package the actual food. Processing takes energy and transportation to get ingredients from one processing plant to another and adds another layer of packaging. Waste occurs all along the chain, from field to table. You the consumer can tackle all these problems, making your food stretch farther, taking less from the earth, and ultimately returning it to replenish the soil.
What you can do:
- Choose food with the least packaging.
- Buy more fresh produce!
- Recycle paper, plastic, cans, bottles, and cardboard.
- Compost leftovers.
